Claire's mother, Beth, is an expert at avoiding the truth. Claire doesn't know Beth's real name, much less anything about the life Beth once fled. But a brain tumor is stirring memories and regrets, making it difficult for Beth to continue hiding her past from Claire. Worried it's too late to make amends and too anxious to simply tell Claire the truth, Beth devises a plan.

When Beth falls into a coma, Claire fears her last chance to finally, truly know her mother is gone. Then she reads the letter Beth left for her. Now Claire has a mission: track down people from Beth's past and deliver her mother's last letters to them. Claire follows the letters into her mother's history and across America. She discovers that Beth has secrets she traveled thousands of miles and invented hundreds of lies to escape.

When Claire finally learns the truth, it will test the limits of her forgiveness and, perhaps, lead her to the greatest gift her mother could ever give her.
